Worth knowing

Ulm is a university town in Baden-Württemberg and is located on the Danube, on the southeastern edge of the Swabian Alb. The city has over 120,000 inhabitants and is the seat of the District Office of the Alb-Donau-Kreis. The nearest major cities around are Augsburg and Munich in the southeast, about 70 km and 130 km away, and Stuttgart in the northwest, about 90 km away. Ulm is the largest city in the administrative district of Tübingen and the Danube-Iller region, which also includes areas of the Bavarian government district of Schwaben. The city is known for its Gothic cathedral, whose church tower is the highest in the world at 161.53 meters. Also worthy of note is the long bourgeois tradition of Ulm with the oldest constitution of a German city and a municipal theater whose beginnings date back to 1641. In the past, Ulm was the starting point for the emigration of the Danube Swabians, who traveled down the Danube with so-called Ulmer boxes to their new home countries in southeastern Europe. Ulm, first mentioned on July 22, 854, was free Imperial City, from 1802 Bavarian, is since 1810 Württemberg and since then separated from its territory right of the Danube, which remained in Bavaria and on which the city of Neu-Ulm developed. The most famous son of the city is Albert Einstein, who was born here in 1879.
