Hermannsburg is a town located in a wonderful forest and heathland landscape in the middle of the southern 'Lueneburger Heide' with a history of more than 1,000 years. The village derives its name from its presumed founder Hermann Billung and a castle which probably stood in the area of today's cemetery. The city was founded around the year 940 because several small farmers and craftsmen were settled between the church and the castle. This led to the formation of a political and a church congregation at the same time. All this together became the village of Hermannsburg. Hermannsburg is divided into two parts by the 'Örtze' and the 'Örtzepark' and has 8,500 inhabitants within its five districts. The quiet location of the village and the rural surroundings offer ideal conditions for a relaxing holiday in nature. The area in and around Hermannsburg is predestined for hiking in the nature park 'Suedheide/Lueneburger Heide', bicycle tours and an excursion with a horse-drawn carriage.
