Neuss (reg dialct Nüss, Latin Novaesium, spelling 1968: Neuss) is a city on the left Lower Rhine on the opposite side of the Rhine from Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. Neuss is the largest district town in Germany and at the same time the largest city in the Rhine district of Neuss, known above all for its Roman past, the Rhine port and the Neusser Bürger-Schützenfest. The population of the city of Neuss exceeded the 100,000 mark in 1963 and made it a major city. Neuss is classified as a middle center in state planning. In 1984, the city celebrated its 2000th anniversary. This makes Neuss one of the oldest cities in Germany.
