Leisure tips
Welcome to Hanover, a nature-filled, livable, and diverse city. Exciting museums, impressive architecture, and numerous concerts and colorful festivals offer unforgettable cultural highlights and experiences for every taste.
Above all, Hanover reveals many surprising sides that you wouldn’t expect. For example, have you ever ridden in a glass elevator that travels up incline? Or have you ever taken a walk in Europe’s largest urban forest, which is even bigger than Central Park? This is just a small taste of this often-underrated city. With the help of the “Roter Faden” (Red Thread), you can easily explore these and 34 other sights along a 4.2-kilometer circular route marked on the ground.
Hanover surprises with its remarkable proximity to nature. The “Green Ring” invites you to take long bike rides, while canoe trips on the Leine River and walks along Lake Masch provide special nature experiences.
Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with family; whether you’re seeking an active or relaxing vacation, or are here on business: Hannover offers something for everyone. The Best Western Premier Parkhotel Kronsberg combines comfort with a prime location and is the ideal starting point for exploring Hannover on your own.
Being active in nature
For avid cyclists, the approximately 160-kilometer-long “Green Ring” in Hanover is ideal; it connects the city with its surrounding countryside and winds through expansive fields and meadows, as well as idyllic villages and stretches of river. The city can also be explored from the water: canoe trips on the Leine River offer unique views of the city while allowing you to enjoy moments oftranquility.

Herrenhäuser Gärten
The „Herrenhäuser Gärten“ are among the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Europe. The „Große Garten“, the heart of the complex, was laid out as early as 1676 under Electress Sophie of the Palatinate, making it one of the oldest Baroque gardens in Germany. With magnificent flower beds, fountains, and expansive parklands, they offer a place of relaxation and showcase impressive garden artistry. In addition, popular festivals and events take place here every year, such as the international fireworks competition or the “Kleine Fest im großen Garten,” which make a visit here truly special.

Lake Maschsee and Maschpark
Lake Maschsee and the Maschpark are a popular leisure and recreation area in Hanover. The lake is very close to the city center and is surrounded by paths, green spaces, and recreational facilities, making it ideal for walks and water sports. In the summer, the „Maschseefest“ takes place here: Over 150 booths and stages along the shore attract around 2 million visitors annually. The „Maschpark“ borders directly on City Hall, whose large dome is one of the city’s most striking landmarks. Together, they create a blend of nature, relaxation, and city views.
Hanover’s Old town
Hanover’s Old Town is the historic heart of the city, and its narrow streets, restored half-timbered houses, and cozy squares invite visitors to explore. The charm of centuries past is particularly evident around the „Marktkirche“ and the Old Town Hall. Small cafés, restaurants, and shops make the Old Town a lively gathering place that combiens history and modern city life.
Cultural Diversity in Hanover: Experience Opera, Museums, and Art
Hanover impressively combines music, theater, and the visual arts: The Hanover State Opera is known for grand opera productions, while the „Schauspielhaus Hannover“ presents contemporary and multifaceted theater, complemented by over 30 other venues and independent ensembles.
The city’s museums showcase a wide range of art, from classical to modern. Changing exhibitions and events contribute to a vibrant cultural scene. Discover a thriving open-air gallery in the heart of the city featuring over 200 works of art, including sculptures, statues, and street art.

City forest Eilenriede
The city forest „Eilenriede“ is one of the largest urban forests in Europe and is even larger than Central Park. It serves as a local recreational area for walking, sports, and enjoying nature, while also providing an important habitat for many animals and plants. What makes it special is its character as a true urban forest: instead of the typical park layout, nature here feels expansive and unspoiled. Trails, playgrounds, forest restaurants, and fitness facilities make it a versatile destination.
Hanover Zoo
The “Erlebnis-Zoo Hanover” is one of northern Germany's most popular leisure attractions and delights visitors with its unique concept as an interactive experience. Instead of traditional enclosures, the zoo combines a theme park with a zoo: elaborately designed themed worlds such as the African savanna, the Indian Jungle Palace, and Yukon Bay are sure to amaze visitors. Animals live in habitats that closely resemble their natural environments, complemented by shows, boat rides, and interactive activities, thereby combining entertainment with species conservation and education.
