Norderstedt was founded in 1970 as part of the merger of the communities Friedrichsgabe, Garstedt, Glashütte and Harksheide from the state of Schleswig-Holstein and has now made a name for itself as an ever-growing and up-and-coming city in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein and as an important business location in the north of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Norderstedt, with almost 75,000 inhabitants, is still considered a city in the green, because just under two thirds of the city area are forest, green, sports and agricultural areas. That's why the second state garden show in Schleswig-Holstein took place in Norderstedt in 2011.
